Eight Taboos for Residential Houses(Chapter one): Gather Positive Energy First to Avoid Misfortune

Greetings to all residents. Feng Shui is centered on the concept of “harmony between humans and nature”, focusing on the balance of a residence’s energy flow and the five elements (metal, wood, water, fire, earth). Based on orthodox classics such as The Huangdi’s Classic of Residence, we hereby remind you of the eight taboos for residential houses today to help you avoid the disturbance of unbalanced energy.

1. Evil Energy Intrusion at the Main Door: Taboo of Scattered Energy and Declining Fortune

The main door directly facing a straight road (known as “spear-shaped evil energy”), a gap between tall buildings (known as “heaven-splitting evil energy”), an elevator, or the end of an apartment corridor all count as evil energy intrusion. According to Feng Shui, “the door is the gateway for energy”; direct impact will scatter the “positive energy” entering the house, making it prone to conflicts and unexpected incidents.Advice to Avoid the Taboo: Place a low cabinet or potted plants in front of the door to buffer the energy. If space is limited, hanging a gourd can help gather the scattered energy.

2. Unretained Energy Through the House: Taboo of Financial Losses and Weakened Health

The main door directly facing a balcony, window, or back door forms a “through-house energy flow” (known as “energy-leaking evil energy”). The straight entry and exit of energy violate the Feng Shui principle of “gathering positive energy and blocking harmful airflow”. Feng Shui regards this as “energy failing to stay in the house”, which tends to cause financial losses and weakened immunity among family members.Advice to Avoid the Taboo: Use a room divider, curtain, or storage shelf to block the straight energy path, allowing the energy to circulate and stay in the house.

3. Filth in the Central Area: Taboo of Blocked Fortune

The geometric center of a house (called the “Central Area”) belongs to the “earth element” and is the “convergence point of energy from heaven, earth, and humans”. If it is used as a bathroom, kitchen, or storage space for clutter, the earth-element energy will be contaminated. The Huangdi’s Classic of Residence emphasizes that the Central Area should be clean; filth covering this area will block the overall fortune of the family.Advice to Avoid the Taboo: Keep the Central Area empty and tidy. If it has already been used as a bathroom or kitchen, keep the doors and windows closed at all times and place air-purifying plants there.

4. Beam Pressing Overhead: Taboo of Oppressive Energy

A beam above sofas, beds, or kitchen stoves will block the circulation of energy from heaven, earth, and humans. Feng Shui considers this “heavenly pressure on the body”, which easily causes residents to feel mentally stressed and suffer from frequent illnesses—especially harmful to the health of the elderly.Advice to Avoid the Taboo: Hide the beam with a suspended ceiling, or hang a string of crystals below it to relieve the oppressive energy.

5. Conflict Between Water and Fire: Taboo of Family Discord

A kitchen (belonging to the “fire element”) adjacent to or facing a bathroom (belonging to the “water element”), or a stove directly facing a water tap, creates a “conflict between the water and fire elements” in the five-element system. Feng Shui holds that “harmony among the five elements ensures family peace”; such a conflict tends to trigger quarrels and financial disputes.Advice to Avoid the Taboo: Install a partition between the two spaces, or place ceramic decorations (belonging to the “earth element”) in the kitchen to balance the conflicting water and fire energies.

6. No Backing in Shady Areas: Taboo of Unstable Family Fortune

A house with no “backing” (such as tall buildings or hills) behind it, or directly facing a valley or river, violates the Feng Shui concept of “facing yang (sunny) and backing yin (shady)”. Without a backing, the energy has no support, which is likely to lead to unstable careers and weak family cohesion.Advice to Avoid the Taboo: Place a bookshelf or hanging painting behind the living room sofa to strengthen the “backing energy”; plant green plants behind the house to stabilize the earth energy.

7. Mirror Facing the Bed: Taboo of Disturbed Spirit

A mirror in the bedroom directly facing the bed will reflect energy and form “illusory evil energy”. Feng Shui regards mirrors as “yin-cold objects”; at night, they tend to disturb the residents’ spirits, causing frequent dreams, insomnia, or mood swings.Advice to Avoid the Taboo: Adjust the mirror’s direction to avoid facing the bed, or cover the mirror with a cloth curtain and keep it closed at night.

8. Missing Corners of the House: Taboo of Unbalanced Five Elements

A house missing corners in directions such as the northwest (representing the “qian position”, governing the elderly and career) or southwest (representing the “kun position”, governing family health) will lead to a lack of the corresponding five-element energy. The Huangdi’s Classic of Residence records that “the four corners of a house should not be missing”; missing corners easily cause shortcomings in the corresponding aspects of fortune.Advice to Avoid the Taboo: Place items corresponding to the missing five-element energy in the corner area—for example, place metal decorations in a missing northwest corner, and ceramic pots with green plants in a missing southwest corner.

Feng Shui is not a rigid doctrine but a life wisdom that aligns with nature. Regardless of the residence’s layout, the principle of energy circulation remains the same. By avoiding the above taboos, your residence can become a peaceful place that “gathers positive energy and nourishes good fortune”.
